Impact of the Individual

John Quincy Adams- Adams, as Monroe's secretary of state wrote up the Monroe Doctrine late in 1823. In the Doctrine, Adams and Monroe basically told European Nations, mostly France, Russia, and somewhat Spain, that they were to act upon the new world with noncolonization and nonintervention. It said that the colonization period was over. Although Adams knew the US wasn't strong enough to enforce this proclamation, they did it with the protection of Britain, who for Economic reasons wanted Latin America Untouched by colonizers. Although Adam's Monroe Doctrine wasn't very useful at the time, It would later become used under Polk and Theodore Roosevelt to enforce their Foreign Policies. (Garrett B.)

Andrew Jackson- Andrew Jackson became a national hero in 1814 when he lead the troops that defeated the British at New Orleans in the War of 1812. A few years later, under President Monroe, Jackson entered Florida claiming to find runaway slaves and to control groups of hostile indians but ended up taking two Spanish posts. This ended in the Adams-Onis Treaty of 1819 in which the United States claimed Florida but had to exchange it for Texas. Becoming a national war hero would later help his campaign in the 1824, 1828, and 1832 elections and also by being identified as a common man. (Ally L.)

Henry Clay-This man is everywhere! He created the compromise Tariff of 1833 to prevent Jackson marching down to South Carolina with his army because of the South Carolina Exposition, although he later on betrayed Jackson. In 1832 Clay and Webster tried to recharter the Bank of the US before it even expired in order to create an election issue for the election of 1832 because he would be running against Jackson. If Jackson vetoed it Clay assumed hed lose enough support from the elite New Englanders that he'd lose the election. However, this was not the case. (Demi F)

Stephen Austin-A Texan pioneer, Stephen Austin brought 300 families into Texas under an agreement with Mexican government. He said that they would become Mexican citizens, Catholic and they wouldn't bring slavery. When they didn't completely follow the agreement he went to Mexico City to negotiate in 1833 where Santa Anna imprisoned him. He created the beginning of the desire for an independent Texas. (Demi F)

Santa Anna-A Mexican leader, Santa Anna imprisoned Stephen Austin when the Americans ignored the agreement made about not having slaves and following Mexican rule. In 1835 he ended all local rights and raised and army to suppress the Texans. However, after facing resistance at the Alamo, Santa Anna was lured in to Eastern Texas where Sam Houston defeated him with American aid. Santa Anna was then forced to sign 2 treaties--that the Rio Grande was the Southwest border of Texas and that Mexicans would leave Texas. (Demi F)

Global Interaction

The Monroe Doctrine was a U.S. foreign policy that stated the desire of the western hemisphere to be left alone by Europe. Monroe declared that any attempt to colonize any part of the western hemisphere would result in a hostile act against them committed by the U.S. Colonization was done in America (because we were our own country now), and if Europe tried to continue along their path of reinstalling monarchs to their thrones, they might feel obligated to affect Spain's old colonies in Latin America. An unfortunate truth: Europe did not stay out of the western hemisphere. They did not heed the warnings of the United States, which showed America's ranking among the influential countries - rather low. (Marisa C.)

Conflict and Cooperation

In 1818 Andrew Jackson, General in the US Army, invaded Florida from Georgia. When Jackson asked for Monroe's Approval, Monroe didn't exactly say no, and Jackson took this as a Yes. Under the guise of hunting down Indian Criminals, Jackson took Florida by storm. Jackson hanged his fair share of Indian Chieftains and intentionally captured two Spanish forts, killing several soldier. This victory of Spain was seen as a success to Jackson's Southern State supporters, but a death knell to US politicians everywhere. This attack later led to the Florida Purchase Treaty of 1819 which, completed under John Quincy Adams, gave the US Florida, and some rights to land in Oregon. (Garrett B.)

Political and Social Systems

Henry Clay's "American System" was created for a wealthy and stable government. He had three key ideas within the system: A national bank (specifically a different one from the one Hamilton presented), a protective tariff (in some cases, more than one), and increased roads/transportation systems. The bank had to be created after the "failure" of the bank Hamilton created. Hamilton's national bank broke up, and state banks were again created. After realizing how poor of a choice they were, Clay created this system to reorganize them on a national level. A protective tariff was put in place in 1816, and it put a 20-25% tax on foreign imports; this also, as a result, made American-made goods far more appealing to the American people. Also, American transportation systems continued to be improved upon throughout the 1800's, and are still being improved upon today. (Marisa C.)

Economic Development

The transportation revolution began in 1811 with the building of the cumberland road. Although Madison vetoed the bill that would have given the federal government the power to finance road projects, states were allowed to fund internal improvements. In 1817, Governor Clinton of the state of New York funded for the construction of the Erie Canal. Robert Fulton and Robert Livingston both created the first commercial uses for the steamboat. The Erie Canal and the construction of steamboats would result in faster, more efficient transportation of goods, which would help expand the economly. Henry Clay's American System supports internal improvements. He advocated for the recharter of BUS to extend credit for buying land, and protective tariffs which would protect America's infant industries and help raise revenue for internal improvements. As a result, roads and waterways would be constructed;therefore, allowing farmers to connect to new markets. (Julianne D).
