Historical Context: In the years following World War II an unprecedented prosperity nourished a robust sense of national self-confidence and fed a revolution of rising  in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s had record numbers of babies, aspired to ever-higher standards of living, generously expanded the welfare state (especially for the elderly), widened opportunities for women, welcomed immigrants, and even found the will to grapple at long last with the nation’s grossest legacy of injustice, its treatment of African-Americans.
