The War Powers Act (1973), limiting the president’s ability to wage war without Congress’s approval, has been used a number of times since the Vietnam era and is still debated in the current war on terror.
The failure of executive privilege as immunity from investigation/prosecution led to the appointment of a special prosecutor in the Whitewater case during Bill Clinton’s presidency. This investigation led to the uncovering of his lies about his affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky and his eventual impeachment (though not removal).
Civil rights legislation at the federal level, such as the Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009, allows for federal prosecution of state crimes that fall under its purview.
